PCD's Environmental educators Chris and Connor holding a couple of the salmon they raised. It was quite the 2021-22 school year for the PCD Environmental Education team. We enjoyed returning to schools to work with teachers and students again. Throughout the school year, we involved over 2,100 students in our programming!

Here are some highlights from a busy year:

  • Salmon in the Schools Tacoma program
    • 12 schools participated in this first year of raising salmon in their schools. 800 students ended up releasing salmon fry into Swan Creek!
  • Envirothon
    • The regional and state competitions were held in-person for the first time since 2019. Stadium High School won the South Sound Regional, and Okanogan was crowned state champions.
  • Glacier Middle School
    • After several work parties throughout the year, we had all the 8th grade students out to the site in May to learn about native plants and help improve habitat along the White River.
  • Curtis High School
    • We visited Curtis regularly for presentations about river systems, mock interview sessions, Earth Day action projects, and hands-on water quality testing. A girl scout troop planting nearly 200 plants in the rain garden at South Prairie Creek Preserve.Students, parents, and teachers volunteer to maintain a patch of habitat along the White River.
