State Senator Yasmin Trudeau visited Silas High School on March 31, to witness the culmination of an environmental learning project by the students in Breanne Willard’s plant biology classes. Through EarthGen’s Stormwater Stewards science program, the students installed a rain garden beside the campus greenhouse.
Willard’s four classes installed more than 200 native plants and trees. As the new plantings grow they will do more than beautify the campus; they will filter stormwater, attract pollinators, and complement classroom science lessons.
The project was made possible in partnership with Orcas Love Rain Gardens, Puget Sound Plants, Hulk Construction, Rain Dog Designs, Pierce Conservation District and the environmental education nonprofit EarthGen. Breanne Willard and Silas junior Alex Schramm received recognition on behalf of EarthGen from the Starbucks Community Stars Program at the Kraken game in Climate Pledge Arena on April 20. Visit the rain garden when you have a chance!
