Tracing Back to Soil Activity

Posted on April 1, 2020 at 3:17 PM by Camila Matamala-Ost

Soil is connected to almost everything in our everyday lives, which is why it’s so important for us to take care of it! In this activity we will be making and diagramming soil connections.

Materials: Paper and writing utensils

  1. Have your kids come up with a list of everyday items. If you need inspiration, you can reference the activity sheet here.
  2. On paper, or by talking it through, trace the item and its components back to soil. For example:
Turkey Sandwich and Chips -> chips are from potatoes; bread is from wheat.  Both of those are plants, which grow in the ground and get nutrients from soil.  Turkeys eat plants or insects which themselves eat plants.  Those plants live in the ground and get nutrients from the soil

Car -> made mostly of metal.  Metal is produced by processing rocks.  Soil is also made partly of broken-down rock.  OR Cars run on gasoline.  Gasoline is made of old, decaying plants, animals, and algae.  They are stored under the soil and layers of rock.

Present your work! How many things did you trace back to soil?
