Storm drains, designed to move water away from our urban
areas to reduce flooding, also end up carrying pollutants
such as street debris, trash, leaves, grass clippings, pet waste,
toxic contaminants (from our vehicles) and lawn chemicals
when it rains. And contrary to many beliefs, water that
enters storm drains is not treated before it reaches our local
streams or Puget Sound. This makes many of our streams
unhealthy for fish, wildlife, and human enjoyment.
Eagle Scouts enjoy this summer activity.
Drain Marking is a small effort that brings large results because
the markers are a visual reminder to homeowners and residents
in the community not to dump waste in storm drains.
What can you do? Volunteers are needed to install these markers
across Pierce County. This activity is perfect for team building
events, Eagle Scout projects, neighborhood improvement actions,
and/or individuals wanting to get out and make a difference.
