White River High School Sustainability Class visits the South Prairie Creek Preserve.
On a beautiful crisp December afternoon,
White River High School students
and their professor Todd Miller, joined
Pierce Conservation District employees
for an exploration of the South Prairie
Creek Preserve. The students spent the
first part of their visit learning about
salmon ecology, floodplain restoration
and how the current efforts to
restore the South Prairie Creek Preserve
will improve spawning habitat for
Pacific Salmon species. After lunch, the
students got their hands dirty as they
planted native trees and shrubs, with
the intention of restoring the previous
cow pastures of the Inglin Dairy farm
back to native floodplain habitat.
