Green Puyallup Day 2024

Posted on November 19, 2024 at 3:27 PM by Laura Wagner

On Saturday November 2nd, over 50 volunteers showed up to Puyallup restorations to get their hands dirty and make Puyallup spaces greener!

What is Green Puyallup Day?

Green Puyallup Day is a yearly celebration of urban green spaces. On this day, we care for Puyallup land with native plant installations and invasive plant removals. Green Puyallup Day targets critical areas, like restoration sites near salmon habitat, that need some extra help.

By the numbers, over 50 volunteers at four sites in Puyallup planted a total of 200 native plants that Saturday. On the ground, we had some rockstar volunteers this Green Puyallup Day. Silver Creek's volunteers efficiently finished all their planting and mulching work with 45 minutes to spare. Green River College's Phi Theta Kappa club brought around 20 people to volunteer at Bradley Lake Park. Many of those volunteers had an unmatched enthusiasm about removing invasive blackberry. Thank you for showing up with your determined attitudes to care for Puyallup green spaces!

One volunteer at Silver Creek joined us for her first ever Pierce Conservation District volunteer event! By workday, Robin mostly works behind a desk. Outside of workday hours, Robin enjoys lawn work and any excuse to enjoy the outdoors. When she saw Green Puyallup Day advertised in a work email, she jumped at the opportunity to use her green thumbs! Robin saw the Silver Creek work party as an opportunity to explore and care for a part of Puyallup she didn't know well. As someone who was raised in Puyallup, she was shocked to discover a hidden gem of walking trails and beautiful nature so close to her. We're so happy that we could provide Robin with the opportunity to install native plants in her hometown's soil!

The Library Workers Speak for the Trees!

Our partners at Puyallup library joined us for a special planting at Meeker Creek this year.

In preparation for this summer, Puyallup library workers brainstormed ways to encourage reading with local youth through their summer reading program. With the partnership of the Parks Department, Puyallup library made a tree planting deal for the books participants read. By the end of the season, local youth's summer reading resulted in 6 new trees for Meeker Creek habitat. We always look forward to lending a helping hand with the changes Puyallup groups make together.

How many library workers does it take to plant a tree? They had a blast putting the reading program's hard earned trees in the soil.

We had such an amazing time with all of you passionate volunteers on Green Puyallup Day. We'll see you again in November next year. The work we do to help Puyallup habitat doesn't end on Green Puyallup Day!
