Kids return to school, leaves changing colors, and the holiday season is approaching. If you’re looking for a way to volunteer, give back, or embrace the spooky season, join us at Dead Man’s Pond! Located on the beautiful Puyallup loop trail, this site hosts a multitude of features including 6 Native plant demonstration plots equipped with signage detailing the features of the plants as well as a planting strip filled to the brim with a variety of pollinator-supporting species.

Volunteers on a freshly planted strip celebrate their work!

Monthly work parties with volunteers have helped us control invasive species on the side like Himalayan blackberry, thistle, and English ivy, as well as install native plants like twinberry honeysuckle, red flowering currant, and baldhip rose.

Upcoming events at the site include a work party on October 4th where you will have the opportunity to support local water quality by bolstering habitat for species like squirrels to salmon. Green Puyallup day on November 2nd celebrates the fantastic work the City of Puyallup has done in partnership with Pierce Conservation District to improve local green spaces and provide habitat for wildlife, beautification of park spaces, and improvement of ecological functions. Pierce Conservation District will also partner with a local boy scout troop that is working on their eagle scout award for this event.

One tree planted can be habitat for hundreds of organisms. Habitat Stewards make this possible.

This site is also looking for a long-term steward. Site stewards host work parties with support from the Conservation District. As a steward, you would receive individualized training and work with our seasoned stewards to help learn about the kind of work we do, why we do it, and how we can best support volunteers. Time served as a steward is educational, fulfilling, and looks fantastic on a resume. So come check us out at one of our upcoming events and we would love to see you stick around for more.
