The District offers almost 30 native tree and shrub species for home landscapes and conservation purposes, including: naturescaping (low-water requirement landscapes), rain garden installations, wildlife enhancement, reforestation, wetland and stream enhancement, and erosion control, as well as landscaping around homes and farms.
Native plants have specifically evolved to grow in the soils, topography, and climate of western Washington. Because of this, there are many advantages to native plants, including greater resistance to pests, better ability to withstand wet winters and dry summers, and overall lower maintenance requirements. Conservation districts across the nation promote the use of native plants for these reasons and the many other positive influences they have on our environment.
