2018 Children’s Water Festival
In what seems like the blink of an eye, the
2018 Children’s Water Festival has come
and gone. With nearly 700 5th graders in
attendance, the University of Puget Sound
was abuzz with learning and excitement
on March 13 during the Festival, now in its
15th year. Students observed marine life up
close, participated in modeling activities,
and worked alongside resource experts and
environmental educators. Pierce Conservation
District is proud to support an event
that features so many valuable partners and
volunteers (over 120 of them!) that come
together to provide such a memorable experience
for these students. Be sure to check out
the Environmental Education page on our
website to see pictures from the event. We
hope you will join us for the 2019 Festival!

Salishan ECO Camp
Our Environmental Education team has been
busy this spring as schools and youth groups
participate in programs and field trips. One
new and exciting feature of our program was
a Spring Break camp in partnership with the
Tacoma Housing Authority and Salishan Association.
Together, we hosted a 3-day science
and nature camp for local youth. As part of the
camp, the kids explored Swan Creek Park, created
native plant seed pods, and constructed
DIY bird feeders out of recycled bottles. The
Tacoma Nature Center also joined in, hosting
nature walks for the kids as they learned about
plant and animal life in the nearby park. After
three days of fun and learning, the kids shared
their accomplishments with their friends and
family with a youth-led presentation on the
final day. The camp was a fun way to encourage
youth to connect to our environment,
and showed that you don’t have to go far
to appreciate our natural surroundings.
The Fair is Coming to Town
The Washington State Fair returns to the Puyallup Fairgrounds
starting August 31. As a longtime member of the Northwest
Outdoors Building, PCD always looks forward to this outreach
opportunity as people flock to Puyallup for the rides,
games and attractions that go with the Fair. Once again we’ll
be in the NWOB, surrounded by youth fishing demonstrations,
wildlife exhibits, and outdoor recreation exhibits.
To volunteer at the PCD booth at the Fair, please contact
